THE RIVER SHEP AND FORSHEP

The River Shep is a small chalk stream that rises from springs at the RSPB Fowlmere nature reserve. It then flows north through Shepreth village to join the River Rhee (also called the River Cam) at Barrington.
Footpaths take walkers along the river, where you can see fish, water plants and invertebrates through the clear water. Over many years, volunteers from the Friends of the River Shep have improved the river for all villagers and visitors to enjoy.

The Friends of the River Shep (ForShep) was set up in April 1999 to safeguard the River Shep from the pressures of modern life. It emerged out of a village meeting, which decried the state of the river and the lack of wildlife. The formation of this society represents a real effort by local people to conserve their local environment.
The group has worked closely with local conservation groups, with South Cambridgeshire District Council, and the Environment Agency.
We value everybody’s support whether they take an active part in the management of the river or not. ForShep is a voluntary conservation group. Membership is by household. The group has over 90 household memberships. We hope that members will enjoy one or more of the events arranged throughout the year. If you are interested in becoming a member, please feel free to download our membership form.
Members receive occasional newsletters and are invited to various events throughout the year. If you would like to join us please email forshep4@gmail.com
